Warmup: Students will try to solve this problem. They may work individually or collaboratively. Students must all write down their ideas on the handout. Continue: Work on the Solving Proportions handout from last class. Activity: Drawing a Scale Diagram of the Desk and the Skywalk Floor (handout) Hand In: Students will hand in their Warmup work, the solving proportions handout and the Scale Diagram Activity. |
November 24/27, 2017
Warmup Look at the figure to the right. Which number doesn't belong? There are many reasonable answers. Your job is to explain your choice using logic. Hand In Students handed in their journals. Review The class reviewed the answers to Build Your Skills p. 19 #12-14, pp. 20-21 #15-17. Practice Students worked on Practise your new Skills #1-9 on pp. 21-25. |

Warmup Look at the figure to the right. Which number doesn't belong? There are many reasonable answers. Your job is to explain your choice using logic. Hand In Students handed in their journals. Review The students used the rest of the class to prepare for the term assessment which will be next class: Using whiteboards, students worked on questions from the Worktext that were assigned by the teacher. |
November 8/9, 2017
Warmup What are the next 3 letters in the following sequence? O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, ___, ___, ___ ... What are the next 3 letters in the following sequence? T, F, S, E, T, T, F, ___, ___, ___... Hand In Students handed in their journals and any outstanding work from the Earning an Income Unit. Learn Students in 1A learned how to simplify fractions. Students in both blocks learned how to solve for x using fractions (pp. 11-12) and identify relationships between numbers using ratios and proportions (pp. 14-15). Practice in Worktext Build Your Skills p. 11 #1 (students in 2B may have already completed these), p. 13 #2, pp. 16 to 17 #3-6 and p. 18 # 9-11. |
November 6/7, 2017
Warmup Arrange 10 pennies as shown to the right. Now move 3 pennies so that the triangle is upside down. Hand In Students handed in their journals. Assessment Chapter 2 Quiz. Learn Students learned how to simplify fractions. Students in 1A did not have enough time to do this as the blocks were shortened today. Practice in Worktext for students in Block 2B only. Build Your Skills p. 11 #1. |
October 27/30, 2017
Warmup From the setup to the right, remove 8 matchsticks to leave exactly 2 squares. Hand In Students handed in their journals. Review and Assessment Students received their marked quizzes from last class and made corrections to earn more marks. Practice Students worked on the Practice Test on pp. 114-117. This was intended to be handed in this class. Many students had not completed the work so it will be collected next day. Students were reminded that the work/calculations must be included; final answers alone will not earn credit. |
September 29/October 2, 2017
Warmup You have 5 small boxes which look exactly the same. The boxes are labelled 1 to 5. One of the boxes is a little heavier than the others. You have a balance with two pans like the image to the left. Each pan can hold all 5 boxes if needed. You do not have a scale to measure weight. How can you figure out which box is the heavy one? What is the fewest number of steps that you would need to find out which one is the heavy box? If you had 9 boxes instead of 5, what would be the fewest number of steps to find the heavy box? Hand In Students handed in their journals. Assessment Students handed in the assignment from Time Cards-Part 2. Review Using the handout called 1 Earning Income, we reviewed the concept of percent including how to convert among decimals, fractions, and percents and how to calculate a given percent of a number. For example: 2% of 300 = (0.02)(300) = 6. Assignment Students were asked to complete #3-7 on the handout called 1 Earning Income. This is due at the beginning of the next class. |
September 25/26, 2017
Warmup We continued with the same question as we have been working on for the last two classes. This time, we used the strategy of taking a complex problem and trying to solve a slightly simpler version of the same question. From there, we might be able to see patterns that could be used to solve the original, more complex, problem. Today, students tried to write the numbers 1 to 6 in the circles (see diagram to the right) so that the sum of the 3 numbers that make up each side of the triangle is equal. They were told that there is more than one solution. Many students were able to find at least one solution and describe their strategies. 1A worked very hard on this question so we spent a little more time to allow further exploration. Hand In Students handed in their journals. Assessment Students were given random partners and asked to complete a time card similar to the three we worked on together. Review We reviewed the definitions of time-and-a-half and double-time and how to calculate these rates of pay when given the regular pay rate. We worked on questions 1 and 2 of the handout called Finance-Time Cards Part 2. We will continue with these calculations next class. 1A did not do this and will need to work on this next class. |
September 18/19, 2017
Warmup 1. Write the numbers 1 to 9 in the circles (see diagram to the right) so that the sum of the 4 numbers that make up each side of the triangle is equal. The purpose of this exercise is to use your number sense to think about how to arrange the numbers. You might not find a solution but you should be able to get close to one. -The students were overall very engaged so we worked on this for longer than usual. -Because this is quite a challenging puzzle, we will work on it again next class. |
